~ Baking Ups and Downs ~

Oh No!
Does this ever happen to your cookies?
Flat as pancakes
What did I do wrong?
They look like something the birds would enjoy

My apple crisp did turn out!
Our favourite after school snack
Do you have a favourite baked item
that brings comfort to your soul?

Good morning Koralee! Your cookies look delicious just the same! My favorite comfort food is pasta, or any starch for that matter. My favorite dish this time of year? Roasted chestnut and mushroom soup! Have a beautiful Thanksgiving and God bless! Anita

My mother used to make bread that was so heavy we couldn't eat it so she stuck it on the lawn and once, a blackbird got it's feet stuck in the bread ! It was ok in the end....

All food is a comfort to me, Koralee !! I love it. I'm sure your cookies still tasted good. As it's getting colder here in the U.K, I think that casseroles and stews are a real comfort.
Enjoy your food this weekend. XXXX

I love apple pie, crunchy with vanilla sauce...mmmm. That´s so good.

Actually, we got a cookie in Sweden, that is totally flat,it´s called "Hvreflarn", and really a favorite among Swedes... So lets pretend that´s what you´ve baked.
I can´t tell you why they turned out that way, but I´ve heard, that making bakerys and desserts, one has to be very exact with all ingredients.

Come on over, You´ve got something to collect...

Hugs/

I mean "Havreflarn". That´s a thin oatcookie...

I don't know why cookies sometimes turn out flat - they just do. Same as some days we don't feel like "rising". lol!

Hi Koralee! There must have been something in the air this week... Remember the Pumpkin Pecan Biscotti Recipe ...
Well... I made them on Monday, and mine are like old taffy, just a little crispy-mostly hard & chewy... not biscottis!
They're "tooth-breakers!"
*the chocolate end is really good though ;o) I think they "fell" because I walked away from the finished dough to answer the phone, when I came back (15 mins later) the dough had actually risen a little from the baking powder. So, they didn't rise in the oven as they should have. Consequently, Chris and I are eating them (not suitable for sharing) ...
I think we'll do anything to get to the chocolate end...
~~~ what a lesson!
hope your weekend is sweet ~Maria
Hi Koralee... my favorite baked item is still my mama's recipe for chocolate chip cookies, partly because they taste sooo yummy and partly because they remind me of happy times with my mama... Bisous... Julie Marie
the flat cookie eh? sometimes mine do that, and I swear it's when the barometric pressure drops -
we crumple them up in ice cream, or make ice cream sandwiches out of them, but really? don't know why that happens - unless it was 'whipped up' to much and stretch the gluton in the flour
(I sound like I know what I'm talking about don't I?)
lol
When my cookies come out flat, I toss a little extra flour in next time. Yours still look yummy!
My favorite baked goodie is hot apple pie w/ ice cream. :)
Have a great weekend!
Did you soften your butter ahead of time? I think that sometimes if the butter isn't blended really well with the other ingredients, the larger bits of butter cause the cookies to flatten. Just a theory...can't prove it. I made oatmeal-raisin last night, with a little dough pulled out to make a few oatmeal/chocolate chunk for me. Some friends just had a baby and "dad" pretty much ordered oatmeal raisin cookies as his treat.
I don't have one favorite baked item...I love most!
Oh Koralee... I did receive an email this week from Melitta. They still sell their frother. It never came up my search because I searched for a "milk frother." (It's just frother ;o)
I wanted to let you know... In case you don't find one locally...
I love any baked good with a cup of tea! My cookies always turn out flat. I'm not sure if I should blame it on my oven, the high altitude in Colorado -- or maybe the baker ;) I think I'll stick to sewing!
Hi Koralee, your cookies look very yummy !! My favorite food memories are always of Christmas Eve at my Italian Grandmother Carmella's home, she cooked all the fish/seafood dishes and baked up a storm. Her home was filled with family and friends. We try so hard to carry on those traditions.
Lovely pictures...I love the adorable red polished finger nails..so sweet!!
With the cookies...it's usually the butter that causes that problem. Just soften it, melting it makes them go flat. They still taste good though! I love any treat..I have such a sweet tooth! Come say hi :D
Dear Koralee~
That does happen to my cookies too! I think it is using real butter maybe? They look so good anyway~ I bet your house smelled heavenly~~~
Hi, Koralee,
Your cookies still look delicious to me. I love apple crisp, too. I guess my all time favorite baked goodie would be brownies, yummm...Have a beautiful weekend! Vicki p.s. I am showing your cute pink French poodle card at Bunny Cottage tomorrow.
HI Koralee - it is climatic apparently. Bakers always talk about it. You can make the very same recipe and it turns out differently (ie flat or non flat). Also temperature of ingredients but you probably new that!! Also I would agree with the butter theory.... xoxo
My Mom made cinnamon rolls and a vanilla cake. She could whip those two up in her sleep.
I'm known for banana bread. My dd told her teacher that I could .. wa la .. and there was the bread. She was in elementary school but still that made me feel good.
Your cookies look delicious...I like them flat and crispy myself. And your apple crisp sounds lovely. But what I really wanted to comment on, is the beautiful apron in the apple crisp photos. It's gorgeous...did you make it?!
Happy Monday!
Hope you are having a wonderful week Koralee! I love your mosaic of photographs what a fabulous skirt (or apron) the colours and patterns are great. It looks very Anthropolgy-esque! My fave comfort dessert is sticky toffee pudding ...
Of course I have made many a flat cookie and they say it is the temp or the amount of soda or powder and maybe they are not fresh. Honestly I never know why I can make a recipe 100 times and the one time I need them to be nice looking that is the time they look flat. Everyone eats them flat or puffed and some times a bit burned:) No waste in our home. I have a love of Brownies when I need a comfort thing along with a cold glass of milk. I am still laughing at the Monkey slippers because as you know I ran to Tarjay and bought out all of those Monkey slipper and now everyone I know is getting a pair for Chirstmas:)
