Poor thing! I had really intense, awful migraines at her age too, they lasted well into college. A dark room, no noise or television, and for some reason an ice pack wrapped in a wash cloth and placed where my head was hurting always helped. Hope she is able to find something to bring her a bit of relief.
Fiorinal saves me from my migraines. It's prescription only, and oh, so worth it. Has she seen a doctor? She should. Hugs to you and your daughter, and best of luck.
I AM SO SORRY TO HERE ABOUT YOUR DAUGHTER, I NEVER GOT A MIGRAINE HEADACHE, SO I REALLY CAN'T HELP YOU THERE I AM SORRY TO SAY. ASK THE DUCHESS, SHE ALSO SUFFERS.
HOPE YOUR DAUGHTER FEELS BETTER SOON. I WILL SAY A PRAYER FOR HER. RIZZI
eat a banana ! I got migraines at the age as well and so did my mother, bananas almost instantly knock them out! YAY for Potassium !~
Like Kim G, I always find a dark room, no noise and an eye mask cooled in the fridge/freezer always helps me. As well as a good dose of painkiller! I hope she feels much better soon. It's completely rubbish having to deal with such intense pain. :(
So sorry to read about your sweetie. Such a great idea posting this, Koralee. I read some wise words already, many comments will follow... hope something will work out just fine for your sweetheart! Sending much positive energy your way. xoxo
I suffered from migraines too.... and then I discovered I was allergic to wheat... once I stopped eating wheat I stopped getting migraines.... take her to have an allergy test it might help....
Oh poor little dear. I suffered through my 20's and much of my 30's with them. I can't imagine a child with them. Same here, dark room, no noise, eye mask, something cool at the back of the neck. The pressure point wrist bands they sell for like seasickness sometimes helped me with the nausea. What finally saved me was seeing a doctor and getting prescription painkillers. The deal with those is taking them RIGHT as the migraine is starting, doesn't work much after it hits full on. Oh yes, my husband would rub my feet while I lay in the dark, sometimes feeling something good far away from the head, helped ease the suffering. Will send healing thoughts to her.
Hi Koralee,
Have meant to post a comment for a while now as I frequent your blog quite often! :D I am Megan's sister in law. I suffered from bad migraines when I was younger and mine were hormonal. There are so many nasty hormones added to dairy products and so my doctor advised me to try and cut back on some of those and it seemed to help. And what I found the best as far as pain meds were advil migraine liquid gels with lots and lots of water. Some migraines can also be caused by dehydration so make sure she's drinking lots and lots of water :D Hope she feels better!
Also... love all the beautiful things you post on your blog!
Sarah
Oh Koralee... I'm sorry to hear this... When I was a teen, I used to have light sensitivity, especially in the morning ~ along with vertigo and nausea- especially during seasonal changes - prob associated with air pressure.
"Back in those days" my mother would let me stay in a darkened bedroom and upon rising, I'd sit outside for a while. The fresh air did wonders...even if the temp was cold.
My sister & a niece suffer from terrible migraines. Their doctors worked closely with them. I know that they were told to keep a detailed diary {sleep, foods, activities} to see if there were any triggers.
For my niece, one was caffeine- this was so difficult for her to drop... She's in medical school and works long hours, and loves coffee {Her migraines did subside and she does indulge in a trip to Starbucks now and then}
Here's a great website, although I know {as the wonderful mother you are}, you have probably visited most of them!
Scrolling to the bottom, I found some practical suggestions...
Oh migraines are awful... I've only had a few, but even my teeth hurt during one!
*Prayers for your daughter*

Oh your sweet little one....migraines are not happy times! Have you noticed a surge of them when she eats certain foods (additives)?
Try placing a few drops of lavendar oil upon a warm cloth and place upon her eyes as she rests...even massage some of the oil at her temples. It works wonders for my headaches and at least relieves some of the discomfort so that I can rest more easily.
I'm also a big fan of acupuncture. Have you tried this method? It doesn't cure overnight, but sometimes it helps with the source of the issue.
Wishing her much peace and comfort...
Melissa
So sorry that your sweet girl has to suffer. I thankfully don't get migraines, my husband does, and for some reason, he likes his feet rubbed during those times.
Poor girl, hope they go away soon, and that you find a wonderful answer that will be the "magic charm" for her. Luckily she has such a wonderful mom to coddle her!
Kate
So sorry to hear about your daughter.Totally not fun :[ I have no great advice but the {dark room, no noise etc.} My son got them alot when he was younger too and as he has gotten older they have gotten better. :]
I also wanted to thank you for visiting my blog! Absolutly thrilled you grabbed my
button too!
Thank you!
Elizabeth
I wish I could help you. I do get very bad sinus headaches and sometimes the only thing that helps is sleeping in a dark room. My sister has an ongoing battle with migraines and I know she goes to bed in her darkened bedroom - no noise and tries to get rid of them that way.
xo

Hi, Sweet Koralee ~ I am so sorry your daughter is suffering. The Drs. told my DH to stay away from any caffeine products, period ... dark room & cool air.
Oh, how DH suffered, I hope the Drs. can help her. Hugs for daughter.
Have a beautiful week.
TTFN ~ Hugs, Marydon
Hello Koralee...i now.i can't help her.i have got migraine too....but when i doing nothing go to bed under the quilt it disappear............i can pray for her.......i think that help................hugs from me and your sweet daughter !! blessings from me........
I feel so bad for her! I guess you've been to doctors? I'm sure you're up on the latest treatments aren't you? I wish I could help...I have never had one but I know people who do and I know they are hell. God bless her...I pray you can find some help Koralee. :}
So young to have these horrid headaches! I feel for her. I take Maxalt. Only thing that works for me. I get mine behind one eye.
Brenda
I'm sorry your daughter is suffering from a migraine. The best think for me is to be somewhere dark and quiet. While she is resting you can be a problem solver. What triggers her migraines, is it hormonal, maybe something in her diet, seasonal allergies, or stress. Has she seen an eye doctor lately? When you daughter is feeling ask her some of these question. I have called my doctor when my migraines have lasted more then a day. Hope this helps.
Koralee, I am sorry to hear of your daughter's migraines...I am wondering if you have heard of paediatric chiropractors? I take my girls to a fabulous one near me, and he works wonders...just a suggestion for some natural remedies?
ALLERGIES? I KNOW IT SOUNDS STRANGE BUT ITS WORTH THINKING ABOUT.
ALSO, CHIROPRACTORS ARE AMAZING...
HUGS FROM MAINE
It's so terrible, huh Koralee? My oldest daughter had the same thing and I just felt so bad. Cold washcloth, lights out, no noise, extra strength Excedrin. That's all we knew to do back then. What does the doc say?
Hi,
I stop by your blog often, as it always makes me smile, so I was sad to read of your daughter's suffering.
Having suffered with migraines for more than 30 years, having seen some of the top specialist in the country, I hope I can offer some advice.
It is most likely hormones, given her age. Imitrex and Frova have been life savers for me! ...and what they give you if you go to the ER, so having that on hand always knocks them out. I would not start on pain pills at her age.
Because it is a vascular disease, the pain occurs from too much blood flow, after the initial constriction - so massage and heat will make it worse if applied after the pain starts. That is why ice and caffeine actually help to shrink the vessels and reduce the pain once it has begun. Massage early on will help, as a preventative.
Acupunture has helped me as well.
Also, a huge culprit ~ sugar! Unsteady blood sugar levels will cause migraines.
I know this is long ~ but I so feel for her!
I hope this helps!
~Dana
Hi Koralee
Your poor daughter. I never had the as a child but since being in my forties I have been getting them. Over the past 2 years I have been getting them almost every month. They are extreemely unpleasant so I sympathise with your daughter. Once the migraine has developed I find it difficult to cut it short, mine usually last 3 or 4 days. I take migraine tablets but they no longer work as well as they used to on me.
The best option is trying to prevent future ones, for this, I have two suggestions based on my own experience.
1. Your daughter could benefit from a course of magnesium tablets. (You may want to do blood test to check her levels)
2. Going to an osteopath
Both have helped me greatly!
Be aware of posture, perhaps being on a computer for long period of time can stiffen neck /shoulder muscles leading to a migraine, that's sometime happens to me that way.
Drink plenty of water too
Unfortunately due to hormonal changes taking place and stress caused by the illness of a close relative & my work load, I am still getting them from time to time.
I am due to go back to ostepath soon!
I'm sure you'll be getting tonnes of advice from everyone. good luck reading through it all. I hope that some of it will be of help to your daughter.
Take care
Isabelle x
I am so sorry for your daughter, Koralee. Thankfully I don't get migraines and I have nothing to offer but some hope and prayers that she finds some relief from them.
xoxo
Jane
Oh the poor thing.I get those less often now.I used to get them much more when the girls were growing up.I know exactly what she gets as well.I have the same type.they are called optical migraines.Mine last usually 30 to 35 minutes and subside with tightness in my head on the one side and nausea.
She is at the prime age for those and they are hereditary as well. What I would do is ask her Dr. about something like Effexor Xr or a type of anti anxiety medication. These regulate the seratonin in the brain and keep migraines away from most people. She could try this, and mostly keep active, always taking walks any form of excercise.
God bless her, I have been there with exactly the same symptoms.
Dearest Koralee, I have suffered with migraines for over 25 years...and have learned to recognize the signs. This is important, so that correct meds can be taken at the "onset" I don't see an ora( crazy lights), but I do get a sharp pulsing pain (sort of like labor pains on my right temple).Really, Really important that your "sweet baby" figure out what "HER" warning signs are.
If she hasn't seen a doctor, then that's the next step, because, as far as meds go, what works for me, may not work for your daughter, and unfortunately, this might take awhile. My miracle drug of choice has turned out to be a product called "Amerge". No side effects for me, not even "groggyness"( which means I can go on with my day)
The weather is a huge factor(barometric pressure... spring is really bad...cold mornings, hot days, cold nights)
Make sure her sinuses are clear so it doesn't become a sinus headache.
So many good suggestions from your caring friends...Dark room, no noise, ice cube in a wet face cloth(touch the pain points, so that you feel "topical cold" and not "deep pain"), LOTS of warm blankets(out of the dryer) as she will probably get very cold...and "peppermint halo" to apply across her forehead and behind her ears (topical relief...really does work...any health food store)
What she eats is also very important... for me...no caffeine,no nuts or peanut butter, no yogurt, no chocolate ):,no bananas... apparently "tyramine" is not my friend (went to a natural path, when I was first diagnosed and extremely desperate.) this might be an option, not sure.
I am sorry this became so wordy... My heart breaks for you, as we want our children to feel no pain, I will be praying for you and your family at this trying time. Feel free to call me at the shop if I can help further...a hug and a prayer...Rosie
Oh i wish i had advice, sending hugs and well wishes for your daughter.
xo,
LuLu
It's tough Koralee, because I guess at her age you don't want her getting into the painkiller routine too often. But a 3 day migraine needs to be checked out. Do they come just before her period is due? Hormones often come into play, and then gradually things ease. I like the acupuncture and chiropracter suggestions. My osteopath is a miracle worker too!
I hope the poor dear is feeling better soon!!
I have no ideas but I will pray for her!!
I too wish I had some wise words for you and your daughter. My sons both suffer from migraines from time to time and find that the Advil liquid gel tablets work the best for them. I'm so sorry and hope that she feels better soon.
Hi Koralee,
Sorry to hear that your sweet daughter is having painful headaches and migraines.
My Sister used to get them when she was young and eventually grew out of them.
Have you done things like having her eyes tested? in case she may need glasses.
I would be going to the Doctor just for a check up.
I do hope that you can get something that will help your dear daughter.
Hugs
Carolyn
Have you checked her for seasonal allergies or sinus infections? A neti pot helps me. If her migraines are not related to allergies, have you tried accupuncture or craniofacial massage? I hope she is better.
Recently, I have been laying my head/neck in a large heating pad. I know this sounds bizarre, but if I do this along with taking my meds...and being really still in a quiet place...in a little while my headache goes away.
Hope this helps.
andrea
PS: Praying she gets relief, soon!
I wish I had some good advise, but I've never had a migraine, so I have no idea what to suggest... I will offer up a prayer though.
I get migraines too. Poor girl, I take relpax. but I Have noticed, when I cut out processed foods, like oreos, ritz, you know stuff with chemicals that is totally man made, they seem to be less severe. When I eat lots of fruits and veggies and healthy carbs, I feel better. I know how hard this is to do, but when your in so much pain you want to cut your head off, you'll try anything right? It may take a few weeks of eating this way to feel better.
P.S. My migraines have lasted 5 days before so I know how tough this is... my above advice helps, for me, for one dose of relpax to work and keep it gone, otherwise I find if I'm eating sugar and bad stuff, I can take up to 4 relpax and nothing touches the migraine.
Oh Sweet Koralee...I am so sorry to hear that your Sweetpea has a migrane headache...and isn't this her BIG week of dance practice?
I sure wish I knew how to advise.
Probably one of the only subjects I don't feel like I can give any advise!
I have just never had headaches...nor has anyone in my family.
So sorry.
But I can say how delighted I am that so many of your lovely friends have come to your sweet rescue with such wise suggestions.
I sure like the suggestion about a dark room...with an icepack.
Please give your baby a snuggle and I will say a prayer that God will heal her quickly.
Sorry my friend.
I love you and am thinking about you.
We need to email and catch up!
xxooxxooxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxooxxoxo
Sending extra kisses and hugs!
Oh your poor poor daughter! I feel for her so much because I too suffered from them, so badly that when I got one I couldn't see. Very scary with two little boys to look after. I just wanted to repeat what a previous poster suggested about magnesium....because that is what has helped me SO MUCH! I've been taking magnesium supplements since having baby #2 and I haven't had even one migraine. This is very unusual for me. I would definitely recommend giving her magnesium. My naturopath suggested this...he says he's treated a lot of migraine sufferers with magnesium.
I hope she's feeling better today! Poor thing :(
hugs!
I have had two migraine headaches in all my life, and both were around the same age. It was entirely awful and both times made me throw up, which I hate. (Not that anyone enjoys it...) I'm not sure if your daughter's happen more regularly, but I wonder if mine weren't some sort of hormonal thing working itself out? Maybe hers, like mine, will up and vanish as she gets a little older! Poor thing. :(
oh Koralee, i hope she is better soon, I also suffer from migraines & really I don't have a clue how to get rid of them when they start.
a shower & sleep is all I can manage. water from the shower on the head helps a teeny bit and when lying down a cold towel over eyes & forehead.
hugs to you
♥
I had one of these on Good Friday complete with projectile vomiting! So awful.
I always have a warm washcloth on my head and just try and sleep it off in the darkest possible room. I seem to get more frequent migraines when I'm dehydrated. Hope this helps!
Sending LOTS of get well prayers to your sweet daughter! I have had migraines since I was 10!- (and have had one yesterday and today and HOPING gone tom.!) sometimes I am able to "shock" them with a dose of caffiene and tylenol...not working this time though- I'm afraid it's just the "season" for them!
Hoping for a much better day for your daughter!
Many Blessings! (and prayers!)
Jill
Oh my heart goes out to your sweet daughter, I have been reading the comments myself seeing some of the remedies. I do hope some of these work for your dear girl.
On a lighter note, I've enjoyed catching up on your previous posts...April Fool's anyone... and the gorgeous colored eggs. Hope you had a beautiful Easter break honey,
hugs DJ
hi koralee,
so sorry, sounds like a giant drag.
i think i once heard that avoiding wheat is helpful. i know drinking lots of water helps me, and a dark room with a cool pillow.
hope your sweetie is feeling better soon.

Dearest Koralee, so sorry to hear that your 14 year old is going thru migraine. It isn't fun it all. My doctor advice that each time i get an attack, i should always :
1. Make sure my room is dark
2. Make sure room is free from noise
3. Make sure room is at cooling temperature {since it's always summer here i will turn on my air conditional}
4. rest and sleep as much
I hope you little one is feeling much better now. Have a lovely merry happy week and i'll be praying for her. Love to you!

An IgG food sensitivity and IgE food allergy test may be very useful in getting to the cause of the migranes. Also, acupuncture is very helpful for me. I hope your daughter feels better soon!
Hope you've received just the right advice. I, fortunately, don't get migraines, so Ibuprofen usually does the trick for my headaches. Sure hope your beautiful girl feels all better SOON! She's in my thoughts and prayers.
Blessings!
PS Thanks for stopping in at http://shesnotjustawaitress.blogspot.com
Your poor baby Koralee....migraines are not good...anytime.I have suffered for years from them(although I am noticing they are lessening for me as I get older). Of course hormonal changes etc. are a huge contrubuter...so is weather...and we here on the westcoast have had a lot of wind and low pressure systems...I always know when the weather is going to worsen as my head starts to tighten (neck...sinus etc.) I find heat and pressure from a buckwheat or bean filled "magic" bag help...lay it across the eyes/forehead. Although a gel Advil helps if you catch the migraine at the very early stages....I have found an over the counter pill called Mersyndol(ask at the pharmacy) really helps (also excellent on menstrual cramps as well)...has a muscle relaxer in it etc. very effective and you don't need a prescription.Cheese and chocolate are trigger foods for migraines...so get her to stay away from those for awhile.
Hope this helps....as a mom...we hurt when our babies hurt.
Take care
Debbie :)
My son had them when he was in high school. He was allergy tested and when he quit eating the foods he was allergic to, no more migraines! It's tough on them (and you)!

So sorry! It breaks my heart to pieces when my sweet kids are in pain. Do you know why she gets the headaches? Food allergies or sensitivity to food additives maybe? I've heard it's hard to pin point the cause. Hope you find answers very soon!
Dear Koralee,
So sorry to hear about your sweet daughter. All the women in my family get them, we call them sick headaches - extreme nauseau, dizziness and fainting - we've found what helps us the most is a very, very hot water bottle laid directly on the worst pain point - make it as hot as she can stand (wrapped in a thin towel). Mine starts in my forehead and travels up and to the back of my head. So I just lay the bottle directly on the back of my head and upper neck which is my worst pain point.
I know alot of people prefer ice packs, but the cold seems to make mine unbearable. Dark room, covers, quiet. Also taking deep breaths through my nose, hold a second and out through the mouth - sounds wierd but also helps briefly. The best thing for a full-blown migraine is bed rest. Be careful about food, also alot of mine come around that 'time of the month' (excuse me for saying that, but it's something to consider).
You recived lots of excellent advice here Koralee. Most important is to recognize when one is starting and to take some precautions to at least make it less severe.
Wishing here a speedy recovery!
Mimi
My kids get these too. My 14 year old seems to have mostly outgrown them, but my 11 year old still has attacks where he screams, vomits, takes medicine and then sleeps it off. I've never been able to figure out what triggers it, but am always telling them to drink water. Dehydration is certainly a cause of headaches. Sometimes its certain foods. And just way too much noise in the world these days. We all need time for quiet contemplation, don't you think? Hope your daughter is feeling much better. Many blessings, Tammy
Oh Dear Koralee, I am so, so sorry for your dear daughter. Migraines are horrible, and she's so young, not to mention your beloved daughter!!
I see you have received lots of advice from others, and I hope it works. The only thing I can add is to gently squeeze the fleshy point between her thumb and index finger! It's specifically for pain in the upper body and head!!! Obviously in addition to any medication she has been prescribed!
I certainly hope she is better sooner rather than later!
Blessings
xxxx
Hmmm... Not good. Plenty of water helps me too x
Oh precious one, I have no idea what to do in this case...I am fortunate enough to have never experienced this, nor my husband and we have no children....but your idea to lovingly take care of her sounds like a good remedy for anything that ails you....what do the docs say?
Anita
I´m so sorry for your daughter! wish I could help!
Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) is an extremely popular herbal remedy in Europe; research shows that it helps prevent attacks and can also ease migraine pain. It is sold under the name Petadolex.
It works by inhibiting toxic chemicals called leukotrienes, which are released during the inflammatory process. It has also been found to help regulate the degree of widening that takes place in the arteries of the brain.
Vitamin B complex supplement is also a good idea as it helps prevent the narrowing of the arteries.
Feverfew(Tanacetym parthenium)is a new one that my mum told me about; there was a study in Germany and patients treated with this reacted very well and symptoms decreased dramatically.
Finally, magnesium is linked to migraines or a deficiency of this so a supplement would help.
Poor lass, I hope this helps. x
Oh Koralee...I am so sorry for her and how horrible for her...
what helps me is our wellness chiropractor...I know some people stay clear of them...but they have helped my headaches and I go biweekly...it is amazing how much the nervous system connects to everything and how much help I have gotten from it in the past.
Just make sure if you do that you go to a wellness one...one that is proactive in overall wellness just not a back breaker as people call them
Dear Koralee, I have soo much sympathy for you and your daughter. As my son and i both suffer from extreme migraines (inherited from my well loved Daddy and grandfather), I know how painful they are AND how much it hurts YOU when your daughter is suffering. We tried Imitrix and other meds for my son (many of them are not even tested/approved for children) but the best med seems to be 2 quick liquid gel Advils, IMMEDIATE rest in a dark, quiet room, and a long, long sleep (sometimes even overnight). Also, staying out of bright, flashing lights, avoiding MSG (we look at all labels!), and drinking more than the usual water has helped. My son is 18 now, and he still gets them, as did my dad and grandfather for their whole lives. I still get mine, but I think the best thing we can do is recognize them at the onset and take immediate steps to alleviate the intensity and duration. All the coaches, teachers, trip advisors, etc., know of my son's issue, and believe me, once they see a kid faint from pain and dizziness they don't forget it! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Linda
I know how bad those can be. I have two friends that get them so bad that they see doctors and take medication for them. Has she seen a doctor yet?
I know the feeling, hope she feel better right now. Mika (www.mikascrap.typepad.com)
Wow it is so great that all these wonderful people can come to your aid in times like these...Seems all the advice had similarities.. and the thing is, is that this advice is probably good for alot of stuff that ails us...All the best Koralee.
Bless her little heart! I am so sorry! I hope she feels better very very soon!
Oh that would be so hard to see your baby in so much pain...she is such a beauty!!! I am sure she is beautiful on theinside too with you for a mom!
When I get really bad headaches my husband pushes with his fingers on pressure points on my neck, just push & hold...it almost feels worse while he is doing it but it feels much better when he is done. I don't know if it will work for such strong headaches though. I will I could be more helpful! Hope she feels better not soon, but NOW! Take care Koralee.
Hi Koralee!!
Oooh, i hope she feel better soon!!♥
The pictures are beautiful!
Now i'm back from vacation and i can follow your beautiful blog again! :-)
Take care!♥

I suffered from them as a teenager. I never found a prescription that helped...but a cold cloth on my forehead while lying in the dark after taking an excedrin and drinking some coke helped. Sometimes people have adverse effects from the caffeine and sometimes it helps. It's all about trial and error. I'm so sorry for your daughter. I feel her pain!
uuugh..
a migraine.. i have no idea what to tell you guys to do.. i totally feel her pain there..
but ya'll will be in my thoughts... it's tough, i know..
Ditto on all the advise above. Hope your little sweetie is feeling better soon.
Just look at all I've missed here. So glad to be back home.
Just trying to catch up on all. So much reading to do today.

Hi Koralee...
I'm so sad to hear that a beautiful young girl has to go through intense pain like that....I don't know what to say...have you had her eyes checked, maybe she's straining?
My daughter suffers from severe nose bleeds...they are not fun to have to deal with either...so I can 'sort of' empathize....
I'm off to read your other posts...haven't been online lately!
ciao bella

I get migraines often but never super strong...about one a day if not more (strange how that happened ever since i got a real job!) Sometimes the only thing that helps me is to find pressure points on my head, like soar spots almost and when I push them it almost like the pain is released from pushing a button...these spots are usually on my temples or forehead. Make sure she drinks lots of water too...and sugar and caffeine will bring mine on.
I recently started kinesiology and I will let you know if that helps me....
Hope she will figure out what works best for her with a little bit of help from your cyber friend community!

I know how you feel. My 14 year old daughter got them often last year at school. I would find her on the bathroom floor (ew) having just thrown up, then she'd go home and sleep for hours! She thought that perhaps it was eggs since, as she recalled, she had remembered getting a migraine each time she had recently eaten eggs.
So she stopped eating eggs for breakfast, and those regular headaches stopped for MONTHS!
She did get one recently though while she was on her period ... my sister's daughter gets them at that same time.
Diet is SO key, however. She should definitely keep a little food log for now.
So sad! For the daughters, and us mamas!
just wanted to stop by and send get better wishes...poor little girl...
you are in my prayers

Dear Koralee,
I couldn't have told you what a migraine was like until the menopause and migraines were my only symptom but, not a nice one. They always lasted for three days and I couldn't do a thing for those three days UNTIL.... the doctor prescibed IMIGRAN. That is the brand name but the medical name is SUMATRIPTAN.If one has a true migaine, no other pain killers will touch it. I don't know if you want to go down the drugs route but, it changed my life and, to be free of that awful pain and feeling, I think that it's worth it. I think that it's a lifestyle choice and, if you have ruled out food alergies and any other triggers, sometimes we need to take a tablet to relieve us of that pain and to be able to get on with our everyday life.
Anyway Koralee, the doctor MUST advise you and I can only tell you what helped me.
I really hope that they clear up soon or that you get a solution that will be right for her. Lots of love. XXXX
P.S. Sorry about the spelling mistakes.... it's late here and I am still recovering from food poisoning . That's my excuse !!!! XXXX
I hope your daughter feels better. Only in the past year, have I been getting migraines. It's sucks.. cool compress, dark room..i also do a meditation.
I imagine all the energy from the migraine flowing out of me back to the earth to be converted to good energy. Then I imagine energy from above flowing to me and sending me fresh and healing light. After five minutes..it helps my migraine dissipate about 80%
I'm assuming you've taken her to a neurologists. I've had migraines since I was 11 or so. My Dad had them and my daughter gets them too. I put ice on an area if there are really bad. Take advil and it helps with the buzz saws. Took imitrex for a while. My d took something called motz or something like that. And, when you are young sometimes the neurologist will have you write down what you eat just in case ...
I would be what some would call a lifetime migraine sufferer, so I know what this is like. I had them the worst in my teen years,(early hormonal changes)and then again the past few years (premenopause), so I know hormone factors are a contributor. I do take a prescription medication when they get bad called Imitrex. That has saved me lots of pain over the years. It's used on a need basis so isn't taken often, but it does get rid of the headache about 9 out of 10 times. I'm a small woman so I take the lowest dose, but it works. I know teens can take it too, as my 20 yo son also had it prescribed for migraines several years ago.
I also started taking a migraine prevention med about a year ago, and it has helped by making them less frequent, and I take the lowest dose, every other day. I'm not big on pills, so I didn't want to take any more than that.
As far as causes, I know there are some triggers, (PMS, grapes, certain perfumes) but sometimes they come out of nowhere.
I feel for her, they are no fun.
Blessings,
Marcia
I have suffered through many a migrane since I was your daughter's age. As a mom it is so difficult to see your child anything but healthy.
I have read the messages and all are good advice and worth trying. Foot massage may seem silly but if you can rub on an accupressure point it does relieve the pain and sometimes eliminate it.
Migranes do have triggers and it can be a combination of three that will initiate a migrane. Lifestyle changes, diet,(including supplements) sleep, managing stress, exercise and osteopaths may give your sweetie lasting relief. Sorry to be so wordy. Maxalt has been the only med that helped mine. Patience and prayers are good medicine too.
Speedy recovery and Blessings, Pam
PS I LOVE your blog
My grandmother, mother, daughter and I have all suffered from this... I feel your sweet girls' pain. So many triggers - it's hard to pin it down. My mother swears by Imitrex (used to be an injection but is now thankfully a tablet) but I have many drug sensitivities and so does Loopy... of late, and it sounds scary, antidepressants have helped us. Not that we were one bit depressed but some of them change the way your brain "receives" pain signals.
Good luck - we will be thinking of you.
I am so sorry for you and your precious daughter. As I type this during a thunderstorm I have a migraine. It took years of food logs, hormone logs, etc, before someone told me to track the barometric pressure as well. I can predict a migraine now, because that is what always triggers mine. As for meds, I take Midrin, Zomig, and Imitrex on a rotating basis depenting on the severity.
I do hope she finds a trigger and some relief.
I hope by now you've had some luck at the dr's & your daughter's headaches are under control. It's such a heartache and worry when our children are suffering in any way.
As a teenager, my daughter went through a terrible period of time like that - nausea etc - nothing helped. The Dr couldn't offer any help other than tylenol which didn't touch them. Someone suggested a chiropracter, which we had no experience with. Sure enough - one single visit with him instantly made them go away and stay away. Turned out to be some issue with her neck from the way she'd slept one night.
I can sure remember how concerned I was, especially when they appeared to come out of the blue & were so out of character for her. I would have been SO happy to have had this medium to get some thoughts from others.
I hope you've got some answers & help by now.

I discovered Exedrin Migraine was the only thing that would knock my pain. I would take two of those, lie down in a dark, quiet room with a cold cloth on my head. Sometimes I would fall asleep and the pain would be much better or completely gone when I woke up. Hope she gets some relief...
